Dead Sea

The healing properties of the Dead Sea were known to Aristotle, King Herod the Great, and Cleopatra. “The water is extremely bitter and salty; no fish live in it, and neither man nor beast can sink,” wrote Aristotle in the 3rd century BCE.

This land was walked by King David, Jesus Christ, and John the Baptist. The prophets knew of the Dead Sea through the infamous cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.

It is said that even in the time of Ancient Egypt, Queen Cleopatra obtained the exclusive right to produce cosmetic and therapeutic products here. Today, this remarkable region has become an international health resort.

The Dead Sea (also known as the Salt Sea, Asphalt Sea, Steppe Sea, Sea of Sodom, Eastern Sea, or the Sea of Lot) consists of a large northern basin and a smaller southern one. It lies approximately 400 meters below sea level, making it the lowest place on Earth. Its total length is about 78 km, with a maximum width of 17 km and a depth of up to 350 meters (with an average depth of 185 m in the north and 6.4 m in the south). The Dead Sea forms a natural border between Israel and Jordan.

The normal atmospheric pressure here is about 800 mmHg—the highest in the world. The salt concentration reaches 33% (for comparison, the Mediterranean Sea has about 4%). The average water temperature in the Dead Sea ranges from 19°C (66°F) in January–February to 31°C (88°F) in July–September.

About one million years ago, a highly saline lake known as Lake Lashon existed here. After it dried up, it left behind a salt layer up to 2 km thick beneath the Dead Sea. This is why the concentration of various salts in its waters reaches such extraordinary levels. All attempts to replicate this exact composition artificially have been unsuccessful.

Numerous minerals enter the sea through underground hot springs. The water, salt, and mud here contain almost all the essential elements of the periodic table, including 21 different minerals (such as magnesium, calcium, bromide, and potassium), 12 of which are unique.

Thanks to this high concentration of minerals, the body relaxes, the skin becomes smoother, blood circulation is stimulated, and metabolic disorders are alleviated. The buoyancy of the water is so strong that even a person who cannot swim can easily float and will not sink.

The local therapeutic mud is far more concentrated and potent than, for example, that of the Crimean resort of Saki. It is formed by the activity of the only living organisms in the Dead Sea—microscopic archaebacteria—and is known for its anti-inflammatory and balancing properties. There is no equivalent to it anywhere in the world.

The main spa resort of the Dead Sea is Ein Bokek, a hotel and tourist complex where visitors can not only receive treatment but also relax, relieve stress, and improve their health in spa facilities of various categories. The unique climatic conditions of the Dead Sea make it possible to effectively treat a range of conditions under the supervision of specialists in clinics located in Ein Bokek.

Just 30 km from the southern part of the Dead Sea, in the Judean Mountains, lies the town of Arad, known for its exceptionally clean and dry air, which is beneficial for the treatment of asthma.

Spa and wellness centers in hotels offer a wide range of treatments for those looking to improve their well-being and strengthen their health. These include classic and Thai massage, shiatsu therapy, mud wraps, reflexology, therapeutic baths with aromatic oils or mineral and salt additives, sulfur baths, inhalations based on Dead Sea minerals, body peeling treatments, and комплексные косметические программы.

Medical clinics at the Dead Sea provide supervised treatments for patients suffering from various conditions, including skin diseases, musculoskeletal disorders, and respiratory illnesses. These clinics use modern equipment and advanced diagnostic methods, offering therapies that combine conventional and alternative medicine, including specialized balneotherapy and thalassotherapy techniques, as well as natural treatments based on Dead Sea products.

Comprehensive, personalized treatment and wellness programs are developed and successfully implemented at spa and medical centers, addressing a wide range of conditions. These programs are typically tailored to each patient’s individual health profile and the specific nature of their condition, based on remote consultations and a review of medical records and test results provided by the patient’s physician.

Such programs require an extended stay at the resort, as they include a significantly broader range of procedures compared to standard climatotherapy courses. Pricing is determined based on the type and number of recommended treatments.

All of the above creates a uniquely beneficial therapeutic environment that cannot be fully replicated anywhere else. The primary healing factor of the Dead Sea is its natural climate—combining mineral-rich water, therapeutic mud, air, and abundant sunshine.
