An author’s walking group tour beyond the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem.
This excursion is designed for those who wish to discover the New City of Jerusalem — the part of the city that emerged beyond the Old City walls in the mid-19th century and gradually acquired a completely different appearance, atmosphere, and character.
Clothing should be comfortable and appropriate for the weather. Comfortable walking shoes are especially important, as many walking routes may include uneven or historic stone surfaces.
When visiting religious pilgrimage sites, visitors’ clothing must strictly comply with local dress requirements. Head coverings should not be neglected.
Transfer to the starting point of the excursion and return transfer to your hotel are not included in the tour price. Please inquire and book these services separately if desired.
However, in most cases, the excursion starting point can easily be reached by public transportation.
Please make sure to bring drinking water with you.
Jerusalem is the capital of the Holy Land, a city whose walls embrace the most sacred sites of the world’s three major religions. Yet this excursion leads beyond the walls and reveals an entirely different Jerusalem.
This tour is designed for those who wish to discover the New City of Jerusalem — the city that expanded beyond the Old City walls in the mid-19th century and gradually developed a completely different appearance and character.
We will see with our own eyes the conditions in which the founders of the New City lived and become acquainted with the works of the legendary architects of the Holy Land.
The New City of Jerusalem will gradually unfold before us like a secret treasure box — through charming old courtyards, magnificent oriental mansions, and hidden corners filled with fascinating stories and unexpected discoveries.
Our walk follows Jerusalem’s most important streets — Jaffa Road and Prophets Street — where nearly every building has its own legend and remarkable history.
We will discover masterpieces of Russian ecclesiastical architecture at the Russian Compound and hear the extraordinary story of the icon of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker.
We will walk around the unique circular altar of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, visit the remarkable Italian Hospital, whose architect Antonio Barluzzi is said to have been inspired by Florence’s Palazzo Vecchio, and admire the eclectic residence of Conrad Schick, often called the “Michelangelo of Jerusalem,” whose home combines architectural elements from many different eras and styles.
Along the route, we will test the accuracy of century-old sundials and learn how time can even be read through the letters of the Hebrew alphabet.
To conclude the excursion, we immerse ourselves in the unforgettable atmosphere of an oriental marketplace.
Our final stop is the famous Mahane Yehuda Market, the oldest market of New Jerusalem. The intoxicating aromas of spices and seasonings provide the perfect backdrop for stories about the people and history of this extraordinary place.
No visitor can resist sampling the many delicacies generously offered throughout the tour.
