Jews rose to a leading position in this field around 500 years ago, when Jewish merchants from Spain, fleeing the horrors of the Inquisition, settled in Belgium and the Netherlands. Evidence of this can be found in an official document from the Antwerp City Council: when Spanish authorities demanded the expulsion of the Jews who had found refuge in Antwerp, the council firmly refused, stating, “Through their work with diamonds, they bring us great profit.”

The diamond industry is a unique global sector that connects individual producers across different countries into one of the world’s most successful businesses. In some countries, diamonds are mined; in others, they are processed and traded; and in yet others, they are transformed into fine jewelry. All mined diamonds and polished stones are traded through five major diamond exchanges worldwide, one of which is located in Ramat Gan (a suburb of Tel Aviv). This exchange holds a leading position globally in both diamond processing and the sale of polished stones. Jewish jewelers and diamond cutters have long been renowned for their exceptional skill and craftsmanship, a tradition that has been preserved and further developed in Israel through the use of advanced technologies created by Israeli scientists.

The Israel Diamond Exchange is truly “a state within a state”. It consists of a complex of four high-rise buildings—“Shimshon,” “Maccabi,” “Noam,” and “Yahalom”—housing more than a thousand offices of member companies. Within the complex are trading halls for wholesale deals, diamond processing factories and cutting facilities, jewelry stores and exhibition spaces, the Harry Oppenheimer Diamond Museum, bank branches, a customs office, postal services, a medical clinic, prayer rooms, shops, restaurants, and cafés.

Membership in the Israel Diamond Exchange requires meeting strict admission criteria, including recommendations from four current members and extensive professional experience. Today, approximately 3,000 people work within the Exchange, including manufacturers, traders of rough diamonds, and dealers in polished stones.

Diamond cutting and polishing facilities here employ innovative technologies developed largely in Israel. These include computer-aided design of diamonds, laser cutting systems, and advanced polishing techniques. King David Jerusalem Hotel

Today, it is part of the Israeli hotel chain Dan Hotels. The King David is one of the country’s most luxurious hotels, welcoming heads of state, leading politicians, and international celebrities.

Situated on an elevated site, the King David Hotel offers incomparable views of the Old City, with its minarets and domes. A bit of history:
In 1929, the Palestine Hotels Ltd. purchased 4.5 acres of land on what is now King David Street. Half of the construction costs were financed by Albert Mosseri, an Egyptian Jewish banker and director of the National Bank of Egypt; 46% was covered by several Jewish investors from Cairo, and about 4% by the Egyptian National Bank.

Since its opening, the hotel has hosted royalty and prominent figures, including Nazli Sabri and Abdullah I of Jordan. It also served as a residence for monarchs in exile, such as Alfonso XIII of Spain, who left the country after the 1931 revolution; Haile Selassie I, who went into exile during the Italo-Ethiopian War in 1936; and George II of Greece, who established his government there after the Nazi occupation of Greece in 1942. During the British Mandate for Palestine, the southern wing of the hotel housed the headquarters of the British administration and military command.

In July 1946, the underground Jewish organization Irgun carried out a bombing in this wing of the hotel, causing the collapse of the building’s southwestern corner.

After the attack, the hotel complex remained in use by the British administration until May 4, 1948. Once the British left, the building was used by Israelis as an administrative center. Two additional floors were later added, and shortly after the end of the Six-Day War, the hotel resumed its commercial operations.

The Cramim Spa & Wine Hotel is located in the Jerusalem Mountains.

The Elma Arts Complex Luxury Hotel in Zikhron Ya’akov.

Perhaps anyone traveling north in Israel along the coastal highway notices, just past Caesarea, a slightly futuristic building that seems to float atop a mountain. This is the Elma Arts Complex Luxury Hotel—formerly the Mivtachim sanatorium. Its clean white lines, geometric forms, exposed concrete, and elevated blocks that create a “floating” effect are a true embodiment of Israeli design of the 1960s.

The exceptionally comfortable Elma Hotel in Zikhron Ya’akov is a truly unique place. Not only is it located in a beautiful setting on a mountainside overlooking the sea, and not only does its history reflect that of Zikhron Ya’akov itself, but it is also a cultural complex—a center for music and the arts. Its corridors house a permanent exhibition of artworks from the private collection of the hotel’s owner, Lily Elstein. The hotel’s galleries host exhibitions, while its two halls—“Cube” and “Alon”—feature concerts of classical and chamber music, jazz, Israeli rock, vocal performances, and percussion.

The “Cube” hall is also used for lectures, ethnic and experimental music concerts, and club events, while the “Alon” hall is dedicated to classical performances. The Elma Music and Arts Center regularly offers several subscription series, including organ music concerts. For the Alon Hall, the German firm Orgelbau Klais created a unique organ with 1,414 pipes. In terms of acoustics, this hall is considered one of the best in Israel.

The central part of the Elma complex was built in 1968 by architect Yaakov Rechter, who received the Israel Prize for this project in 1972. In 2006, the old building and its surrounding grounds were purchased by Lily Elstein, granddaughter of the founders of Zikhron Ya’akov. When she learned that the hotel in her hometown was to be demolished, she decided to save it and transform it into an international arts center and luxury hotel. She invested 350 million shekels and years of work into the restoration and development of the complex, with the participation of architect Amnon Rechter, the son of Yaakov Rechter. Her vision was not just a hotel, but a concept combining style, design, and art. Lily Elstein is an art collector and patron who supports young talents. The name “Elma” comes from the initials of the project: Elstein Music & Art.

The London-based firm United Designers redesigned the public areas of Elma in accordance with Elstein’s vision. Clean, classical lines highlight the exhibition spaces, for which three spacious galleries with a total area of 750 square meters were created.

The New Jaffa Hotel - part of the Fattal Limited Edition

The The Jaffa, a Luxury Collection Hotel (part of the Fattal Limited Edition) is an architectural masterpiece that seamlessly blends millennia-old history with contemporary minimalism.

The studio of British designer John Pawson carried out a complete renovation of the former monastery of the Saint Joseph de l’Apparition in Jaffa. The building was transformed into a boutique hotel with an outdoor swimming pool. Historically, the monastery complex included the Louis IX Hospital and a pilgrims’ hostel, functioning actively from the 1880s until the late 1960s, when the hospital was closed. Most of the complex was later leased by the State of Israel and used as a psychiatric hospital until 1997.

John Pawson collaborated with Israeli architect and environmentalist Rami Gill to transform the monastery buildings, blending various architectural styles—including Arab and Neo-Romanesque—with modern design elements. Original stained glass windows and historic stonework were carefully preserved. Excavations revealed remains of Crusader-era fortifications, which have now been integrated into the hotel’s interior. Landscape design for the project was created by the New York–based firm Rees Roberts + Partners. Pawson retained many historical details while harmoniously combining them with contemporary furnishings.

And now, a bit of history.

There was a figure named Haj Amin al-Husseini. As the Mufti of Jerusalem, he was also a leader of the Arab nationalist movement and a personal associate of Adolf Hitler, who even granted him the status of an “honorary Aryan.”

In 1928, concerned about the construction of the King David Jerusalem—initiated by a Jewish financier—al-Husseini decided to provide what he saw as a “symmetrical response” to Jewish involvement in the city’s hotel industry. He hired 500 workers and, notably, Jewish subcontractors to build his own hotel. Construction progressed rapidly, and the building was completed within a year. During the foundation works, several Mamluk-era graves discovered on site were destroyed—reportedly in violation of Islamic traditions—and workers were instructed not to speak about it.

In 1929, the hotel—then called the “Palace Hotel”—opened its carved wooden doors to guests. Luxurious and richly decorated, it featured high marble columns in the lobby, ornate stone carvings, canopied beds, and, notably for the time in the Middle East, telephones in every room. Although the Palace Hotel was built earlier and impressed with its opulent Eastern style, by 1935 it ceased to operate as a hotel, unable to compete with the King David. The building was then handed over to the British administration for office use.

Nevertheless, some rooms were reserved for distinguished guests of the Mufti; in 1936, Adolf Eichmann stayed there. That same year, the hotel hosted the Peel Commission, led by Lord Peel, which aimed to address the Arab–Jewish conflict in Mandatory Palestine.

After the Israeli War of Independence, the building became home to ministries of the young State of Israel. In 1999, it was acquired by a company associated with the Hyatt chain, but remained unused until 2005. Only then, after being purchased by new owners, did it become the foundation for the construction of the Waldorf Astoria Jerusalem, which began in 2010. From the original Palace Hotel, only the outer walls with their intricate stone carvings have been preserved.
