Treatment and Relaxation at the Dead Sea

The healing powers of the Dead Sea have been known since ancient times to figures such as Aristotle, King Herod, and Cleopatra. “Its water is extremely bitter and salty; no fish can live in it, and neither man nor beast can drown,” wrote Aristotle in the 3rd century BC.

This land was walked by King David, Jesus Christ, and John the Baptist. The prophets knew of the Dead Sea through the infamous cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.

It is said that as early as the time of Ancient Egypt, Queen Cleopatra was granted “exclusive rights” to produce cosmetics and medicinal remedies here. Today, this remarkable region has become an international health resort.

The Dead Sea—also known as the Salt Sea, the Asphalt Sea, the Steppe Sea, the Sea of Sodom, the Eastern Sea, or the Sea of Lot—consists of a large northern basin and a smaller southern one. It lies approximately 400 meters below sea level, making it the lowest point on Earth.

Its total length is about 78 km,
its maximum width is 17 km,
and its depth reaches up to 350 meters. The average depth is 185 meters in the north and 6.4 meters in the south.
The Dead Sea forms a natural border between Israel and Jordan.

The normal atmospheric pressure here is about 800 mm Hg (the highest in the world).
The salt concentration is around 33% (for comparison, the Mediterranean Sea is about 4%).
The average water temperature in the Dead Sea ranges from 19°C in January–February to 31°C in July–September.

About one million years ago, this area was home to the highly saline Lake Lisan. After it dried up, it left behind a salt layer up to 2 km thick beneath what is now the Dead Sea. This is why the concentration of various salts in its waters reaches as high as 33%. All attempts to replicate this unique composition precisely have been unsuccessful.

A wide range of minerals also flows into the sea from the hot springs that feed it. The water, salt, and mud here contain virtually all the essential elements of the periodic table, including 21 different minerals (such as magnesium, calcium, bromide, and potassium), 12 of which are unique.

Thanks to this exceptionally high mineral content, the body relaxes, the skin becomes smoother, blood circulation is stimulated, and metabolic disorders are alleviated. The buoyancy of the water is so strong that even a person who cannot swim can easily float and will not sink.

The local therapeutic mud is far more concentrated and potent than that found in other resorts, such as Saki in Crimea. It is formed by the activity of the only living organisms in the Dead Sea—microscopic archaebacteria—and is known for its anti-inflammatory and balancing properties. There is no equivalent to it anywhere else on Earth.

The main balneological resort of the Dead Sea is Ein Bokek—a hotel and tourist complex where visitors can not only receive treatment, but also relax, relieve stress, and improve their health in the spas of hotels of various categories. The unique climatic conditions of the Dead Sea make it possible to effectively treat a range of conditions under the supervision of specialists at clinics also located in Ein Bokek.

Just 30 km from the southern part of the Dead Sea, in the Judean Mountains, lies the town of Arad, renowned for its uniquely clean and dry air, which is highly beneficial for the effective treatment of asthma.

Wellness and cosmetic centers in hotel spas (SPA) offer a wide range of treatments for those who wish to improve their well-being and strengthen their health. These include …

Dead Sea clinics offer medically supervised treatments for patients suffering from a wide range of conditions, including skin disorders, musculoskeletal diseases, and respiratory illnesses. These clinics are equipped with advanced technology and utilize the latest achievements in early diagnostics. Treatment is based on an integrated approach that combines modern conventional and alternative medicine, making use of unique balneotherapy and thalassotherapy methods, as well as natural products derived from the Dead Sea.

Comprehensive, individualized health and treatment programs have been developed and are successfully implemented in the resort’s medical centers. As a rule, such programs are tailored to each patient’s specific condition and the nature of their illness, often based on remote consultations using medical test results and physicians’ reports. These programs are designed for continuous stays at the resort over a certain period, as they include a significantly broader range of procedures than standard climatotherapy courses. Pricing is determined according to the type and number of recommended treatments.

All of the above creates a uniquely beneficial therapeutic environment for the human body—one that cannot be fully replicated anywhere else. The Dead Sea’s most powerful remedy is its climate itself: the mineral-rich water, therapeutic mud, air, and abundant sunshine.
